The Story
Behind the Film
Positive is a narrative, PSA-style, short film that centers around Alabama's chemical endangerment law, which puts pregnant adicts, who are already in a difficult position, under even more pressure and stigmatization. It is my intention to bring awareness to this legislation and more broadly, the effects of limiting a woman's access to healthcare and their right to choose.
The film aims to convey an authentic struggle of a soon-to-be mother who is torn between her pills and her pregnancy within the landscape of a justice system stacked against her. The color progression of warm-yellow to cool-blue tones was chosen mindfully to evoke discretion in the first half and loss or new beginnings in the second half. Elements of set design such as the painting were meticulously conceived of and crafted to help tell the story. The film illustrates themes of isolation, motherhood, and cultural conflictual bond between a mother and daughter.
It is my hope that we could convey this message authentically and could bring a raw and accurate depiction of a woman in pain to the screen.
